A Course in Hummingbirds
A 10-Weeks Capitalist Detox
A Course in Hummingbirds: The 8-Week Journey
Week 1: Understanding the Crisis
The Jigsaw Without a Lid. What's the big picture nobody wants you to see? Where are you in the bell curve? We introduce the system as it really works -- not as you've been told it works. You'll start to understand why you feel the way you do.
Week 2: The Machinery of Control
How does capitalism seduce us into compliance? Meet the GRiFTers, the sleepwalk, the distraction machine, commodity fetishism, the hedonic treadmill. Where are you complicit? And more importantly -- why?
Week 3: The Personal Dragon
This is the Jung week. Shadow work. Your own greed, your own choices, your own complicity. The personal dragon feeds the global one. This is where discomfort becomes honesty. This is where you start to wake up.
Week 4: Awakening & Processing the Reality
George's moment. Recognising what you've become. The cognitive dissonance breaking open. And then the real work: grief, guilt, anger. Not spiritual bypassing. Real emotional work. Moving from shame to power.
Week 5: Redefining What Matters
Beyond GDP. Beyond the hedonic treadmill. What actually makes you happy? What's the good life on your terms? This week is about moving from consumption to contribution.
Week 6: The Hummingbird Approach
Small, consistent, manageable actions. Finding your beak-full of water. Local cooperation. Historical precedent: abolition, suffrage, Gandhi. This is where theory meets practice.
Week 7: Your Personal Manifesto
What are you actually going to do? How are you going to live differently? What's your 12-month plan? This week is about turning understanding into action.
Week 8: Moving Forward
Integration and next steps. You've done the work. Now what? How do you stay on this path? How do you invite others without preaching? The ripple effect begins.

While writing The Dragon & the Hummingbird, I began to see how the stories we are told about the sovereignty of capitalism effect how much we believe we can change the status quo.
These narratives act as a barrier to innovation, particularly when we confront the urgent crises of global warming and biodiversity loss.
That realisation was a turning point for me and prompted a shift in my thinking that led to the development of the Hummingbird Effect.
Since then I’ve wanted to help others experience that same transformative shift and provide the tools they can use to act upon it.
So now, in partnership with my wife Sarah, who is a psychotherapist, we have distilled this journey into an 8-week online course.
If you're interested in taking part or have any questions, please let me know in the box below.
Thanks,
Graham & Sarah
